Arnefrit 1 was a Lombard, son of Lupus 1; after his father's death (in 663) he tried to succeed him as dux of Forum Iulii ("voluit in loco patris aput Foroiuli optinere ducatum"), but fled in fear of king Grimoald (Grimoald 3) and sought refuge among the Slavs of Carantana (the text says: "in Carnuntum, quod corrupte vocitant Carantanum"; the Slav province of Carantana is wrongly identified with the old city of Carnuntum); he later returned with the Slavs seeking to regain with their help the ducatus ("quasi ducatum eorum viribus resumpturus") but was attacked and killed by the people of Forum Iulii at a place called Nemae castrum ("apud Nemas castrum") not far from Forum Iulii: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 22. Arnefrit 1 had a sister, Theuderada 1: Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. V 25. See also Wechtari 1 (his successor).
