Anastasios 37 was head of the defensores in the Church at Rome (Anastasium primum defensorum); sent as envoy with Gemmulus (Gemmoulos 2) by pope Stephen IV (III) (Stephanos 84) (in 770/772) to the Lombard king Desiderius (Desiderios 3), to ask for the restoration of the rights (iustitiae) which Desiderios 3 had hitherto refused to restore; the message they returned with was that the pope should be satisfied with the removal of Christophoros 26 and Sergios 53 from positions of domination over him and not make further demands: Lib. Pont. 97. 5. Anastasios 37, "primus defensorum", was the envoy also of pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1), with Pardos 7, to Desiderios 3, asking again for the return of the captured cities and promising a visit from Hadrianos 1 immediately if the king would return them, but Desiderios 3 again refused and they left empty handed: Lib. Pont. 97. 21.
