Waldrada 1 was mistress of king Lothar II (Lotharios 2); he married her after securing a divorce from his wife Theutberga 1; the bishops who gave their approval to the divorce and the marriage were subsequently condemned and deposed by the bishop of Rome, Nicolas I (Nikolaos 28): Lib. Pont. 107. 44-50. The divorce was approved at Councils in Gaul in 860 and permission for the marriage was given at another Council in Gaul in 862; see Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 170, nn. 41-45.
