Theutberga 1 was the queen ("regina") of the Franks and wife of king Lothar (Lotharios 2); she was divorced by her husband who then married his mistress Waldrada 1: Lib. Pont. 107. 44-46. The divorce was approved by the archbishops of Trier and Cologne, Theutgaud 1 and Gunthar 1, but condemned by the bishop of Rome, Nicolas I (Nikolaos 28); cf. Lib. Pont. 107. 44-50. The divorce was approved at Councils in Gaul in 860 and the marriage with Waldrada 1 at a Council in Gaul in 862; see Duchesne, Lib. Pont. II, p. 170, nn. 41-45, and cf. Hincmar, s.a. 864 on the violent outcome of this affair in Rome.
