Theopistos 1 was bishop of Hermokapeleia in Lydia; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was present at most, if not all, of the sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 995-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Θεοπίστου ἐπισκόπου Ἑρμοκαπηλίας: Mansi XII 995, XIII 369. Elsewhere he is styled Θεόπιστος ἐπίσκοπος Ἑρμοκαπηλίας or similar: Mansi XIII 144, 389 (Ἑρμοκαπήλου). At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 144. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 389. His name is missing from the list of those at the second session who supported the traditional veneration of icons, perhaps in error. He may, however, have been represented at this session by the deacon Ioannes 137, q.v.
