Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Ioannes 137 was a deacon, attested at the second session of the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) on 26 September 787, where he represented the see of "Apostolia"; he spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons as described in letters from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1): Mansi XII 1095 (Ἰωάννης διάκονος καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων Ἀποστολίας; the Latin version, at XII 1096, calls him "Ioannes diaconus et locum tenens Apostolicae sedis (sic)"). The see is not otherwise recorded and Ioannes does not occur again in the acts of the Council. The name of the see is probably corrupt, and may contain the name of a see whose bishop is recorded elsewhere at the Council but not at the second session. One possibility is Hermokapeleia, whose bishop, Theopistos 1, attended the first and later sessions but not the second; another might be Attaleia in Pamphylia, whose bishop Paulos 29 attended the first session of the Council only.
