Theophylaktos 20 was a deacon; he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) as representative of Stauropolis (formerly Aphrodisias), the metropolis of Caria; he was probably present at all eight sessions of the Council, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the lists of those present at the first and seventh sessions he is styled Θεοφυλάκτου διακόνου καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ τῆσΣταυρουπολιτῶν μητροπόλεως: Mansi XII 994 and Θεοφυλάκτου διακόνου καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ Καρίας: Mansi XII 998, XIII 365. Elsewhere he is styled Θεοφύλακτος διάκονος καὶ ἔξαρχος, τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων τῆς μητροπόλεως Καρίας, Mansi XII 1091, XII 1154 (Θεοφύλακτος διάκονος καὶ τοποτηρητὴς τῆς Σταυροπολιτῶν μητροπόλεως); Θεοφύλακτος ἀνάξιος διάκονος, ἔξαρχος, καὶ ἐκ προσώπου τῆς λαμπρᾶς μητροπόλεως Καρίας, Mansi XIII 137; and Θεοφύλακτος ἁμαρτωλὸς, διάκονος καὶ ἔξαρχος, καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων τοῦ θρόνου Σταυρουπόλεως ἤτοι Καρίας, Mansi XIII 381. At the second session he spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1091. At the third session he accepted as orthodox the statements of the faith contained in letters from Tarasios 1 and the eastern patriarchs and also condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1154. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 137. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 381. The exarchos was an official in charge of monasteries appointed by the bishop; cf. Beck, Kirche, p. 138, n. 1.
