Theophanes 1 was also known as Monotios or Monotes: Nic. Brev. de Boor 60, Mango 64:28-29 (Θεοφάνης δέ, ὃν Μονώτιον ἐκάλουν), Theoph. AM 6233 (ὁ Μονώτης), Theoph. AM 6235 (the MSS have Μονούτης).

Father of Nikephoros 3: Nic. Brev. de Boor 60, Mango 64, Theoph. AM 6233 (ὁ Μονώτης ... Νικήφορον, τὸν ἴδιον υἱόν). Patrikios and magistros, in 741 he remained in Constantinople in charge of affairs for Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) while the emperor was away on campaign against the Arabs (τὴν τοῦ μαγίστρου ἀξίαν διέπων καὶ τὴν βασιλέως χρείαν εἰς Βυζάντιον ἀποπληρῶν: Nic. Brev. de Boor 60, Mango 60:29-30; Θεοφάνην τὸν πατρίκιον καὶ μάγιστρον ἐκ προσώπου ὄντα ἐν τῇ πόλει: Theoph. AM 6233); the rival emperor Artabasdos 1 wrote a letter to Theophanes 1, sent with Athanasios 1; and Theophanes 1 summoned the people and announced that the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) was dead and that the army had proclaimed Artabasdos 1; Artabasdos 1 was then proclaimed emperor at Constantinople and Theophanes 1 summoned his own son Nikephoros 3 from Thrace to guard the city: Nic. Brev. de Boor 60, Mango 64, Theoph. AM 6233, cf. Zon. XV 5. 8 (τῶν δημοσίων οἰκονόμος πραγμάτων παρὰ τοῦ Κωνσταντίνου ὁ μάγιστρος Θεοφάνης εἰάθη; he supported Artabasdos 1). He was killed in late 743 when Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) defeated Artabasdos 1 in battle outside the walls of Constantinople: Theoph. AM 6235. As a supporter of Artabasdos 1, he was probably himself an opponent of iconoclasm. See Rochow, Konstantin V, p. 242
