Son of Theophanes Monotes (Theophanes 1), Nikephoros 3 was strategos of Thrace in 742 (κατὰ τὴν Θρᾴκην τότε στρατηγοῦντα: Nic., Brev. de Boor 64, Mango 64:32-33; Νικηφόρον, τὸν ἴδιον υἱόν, στρατηγοῦντα τῆς Θρᾴκης: Theoph. AM 6233); when his father (Theophanes 1), then in Constantinople, proclaimed Artabasdos 1 emperor in place of Constantine V (Konstantinos 7), Nikephoros 3 was summoned by Theophanes 1 to bring his army to the defence of Constantinople: Nic., Brev. de Boor 60, Mango 64, Theoph. AM 6233.
