Theodoros 175 was bishop of Caria and was then transferred to become bishop of Laodikeia (Θεοδώρου τοῦ ἀπὸ Καρίας εἰς Λαοδίκειαν μετατεθέντος); in 867 he was sent with Zacharias 18, bishop of Chalcedon, by Photios 1 to Rome with a copy of the acts of the Council recently called at Constantinople by Photios 1, which deposed and excommunicated the bishop of Rome, pope Nicolas I (Nikolaos 28): Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 537C-D. Shortly afterwards the emperor Michael III (Michael 11) was succeeded by Basilios 7, who immediately recalled the envoys from their journey: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 540A. Theodoros 175 and Zacharias 18 had been given copies of a synodical letter written by Photios 1 against Nikolaos 28, which they were expected to deliver to the king and queen of the Franks with many splendid gifts, for them to expel Nikolaos 28 from his see: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 541C, cf. 537B-C (Lodo chos 1 and Engelberga 1 were promised imperial acclamations at Constantinople if they expelled Nikolaos 28 from his see). The envoys were apparently supposed to travel via Rome to Francia. See Grumel, Regestes 465 and 469 for other sources. The metropolitan bishop of Laodikeia, Theodoros 175 was the addressee of a number of letters from the patriarch Photius (Photios 1), all, with one possible exception, dateable in or after October 867; all are addressed either Θεοδώρῳ μητροπολίτῃ Λαοδικείας or τῷ αὐτῷ: Photius, Epp. 41, 71, 72, 88 (all written between Oct. 867 and Sept. 869), Ep. 139 (between 859 and Sept. 869; the content of this letter is theological), Epp. 140, 141 (between Oct. 867 and Sept. 869), Ep. 171 (between 873 and ?875), Ep. 194 (between Oct. 867 and Sept. 869), Epp. 251, 252 (between 873 and ?875). The letters are in Laourdas-Westerink I 89, 114, 127, 191-195, II 46, 94, 189ff. A friend (φίλος) of Photios 1, he was asked by Photios 1 in one letter if the rumour that he had deserted him was true: Photius, Ep. 88. In one letter he is addressed as ὦ φίλος, τέκνον ἡμέτερον: Photius, Ep. 71. Elsewhere he is styled by Photios 1 as τῇ σῇ γενναιότητι and τὴν σὴν στερρότητα: Photius, Ep. 140. At the anti-Photian Council of 869/870 Theodoros 175 and other bishops installed by Ignatios 1 or Methodios 1 expressed their regret at having supported Photios 1 (7 Oct. 869); at this Council he was again made bishop of Caria but when he insisted on supporting the condemnation of Nikolaos 28, he was deposed and subjected to the jurisdiction of the pope; he disappears from the acts of the Council after the ninth session (12 Feb. 870): Mansi XVI 44, 205CD, Mansi XVI 257A, 260E, Theognostus, Libellus ad Nicolaum I 857CD, 861A, Synodicum Vetus, 161, 8ff., p. 138. Theodoros 175 was apparently bishop of Caria (presumably of Aphrodisias) under either Ignatios 1 or Methodios 1 before becoming bishop of Laodikeia, a post which he held under the first patriarchate of Photios 1 (he was therefore bishop by 859).
