Engelberga 1 was the wife (γαμετὴν) of the emperor Louis II (Lodoïchos 1); letters from the patriarch Photios 1 in 867 asked Lodoïchos 1 and Engelberga 1 to expel pope Nicholas I (Nikolaos 28) from his see and promised acclamations by the imperial title for them at Constantinople if they did so; Photios 1 also sent rich gifts; the message, sent via Zacharias 18 and Theodoros 175 (shortly before the death of the emperor Michael III (Michael 11), on 23 September), never arrived: Nicetas, Vita Ignatii 537B-C, 541C.
