Theodoros 76 was known as Koupharas (Θεόδωρος ὁ Κουφαρᾶς); he was a monk who was captured by the Bulgars and lived among them for many years; enquiries were made about him by the empress Theodora 2 with a view to ransoming him: Theoph. Cont. IV 14 (pp. 162) (Θεοδώρου τοῦ ἐπίκλην Κουφαρᾶ), Ps.-Symeon 664 (Θεοδώρου τοῦ Κουφαρᾶ). He had given the Bulgar ruler Boris 1 a rudimentary education and also taught him something about Christianity (ἦν γὰρ παρὰ τοῦ εἰρημένου Κουφαρᾶ μικρά τινα παιδευθεὶς καὶ τῶν μυστηρίων κατηχηθείς); following negotiations by Theodora 2 he was exchanged for the sister of Boris 1 (see Anonyma 7): Theoph. Cont. IV 14 (p. 163), Zon. XVI 2. 5-7. On the name, cf. Winkelmann, Quellenstudien, p. 166.
