Theodegios 1 was possibly a pupil of Leo the Philosopher (Leo 19); he was put in charge of the astronomy section of the school of higher studies created by Bardas 5 in the Magnaura at Constantinople under the reign of Michael III (Michael 11): Theoph. Cont. IV 29 (p. 192) (καὶ Θεοδήγιος τοῦ τῆς ἀστρονομίας, sc. διαιτητηρίου προΐστατο). His teacher was probably Leo 19; cf. Theodoros 162. He was appointed to teach astronomy at the Magnaura by Bardas 5, and was rewarded out of imperial funds: Genesius IV 17 (ἐν ἀστρονομίᾳ Θεοδήγιον).
