Stephanos 83 was a soldier serving in a regiment of Armenians in Thrace (Στέφανός τις, στρατιώτης τοῦ στίφους τῶν Αρμενίων, Vita Steph. Iun. 153, 18-19 (1156A)); he suffered from an affliction which left him doubled over; he visited Stephen the Younger (Stephanos 2) in exile on Prokonnesos (probably 762/763) (he came over ἐκ τῶν τῆς Εὐρώπης μερῶν, Vita Steph. Iun. 153, 19-20 (1156A)) and recovered his health and strength after venerating icons of Christ and the Theotokos; when he then returned to his regiment (πρὸς τὸ ἴδιον τῆς στρατείας τάγμα, Vita Steph. Iun. 153, 23-24 (1156A) and described what had occurred, he was accused of idolatry and reported by his fellow-soldiers to the strategos of Thrace (τὸν ἀρχισατράπην τῆς Θρᾳκῆς; see Anonymus 253), who sent him before the emperor (Constantine V, Konstantinos 7); he repented and anathematised the veneration of icons; he was then raised by the emperor to the position of centurion (τῇ τοῦ κεντουρίωνος ἀξίᾳ, 154, 11-12; 1156C), but no sooner had he left the palace than he fell from his horse and was killed: Vita Steph. Iun. 154, 15-17 (1156C).
