Stephanos 78 was a priest, probably of Rome; in spring 743 he was sent with the primicerius of the notarii, Ambrosius (Ambrosios 1), by pope Zacharias (Zacharias 16) from Ravenna to the Lombard king Liutprand 1 to announce the approach of the pope; at Imola, inside Lombard territory, they discovered that the Lombards intended to prevent the pope's visit and they informed Zacharias 16 of this secretly, sending a message under cover of darkness; Zacharias 16 set out after them while they went on ahead; when they came to Liutprand 1, he refused to receive them, but when Zacharias 16 arrived, reaching the river Po (near Ticinum) on 28 June, Liutprand 1 sent representatives to greet him: Lib. Pont. 93. 14 ("Stephanum presbiterum"). He is presumably to be identified with one of the three priests called Stephanos who attended the Council of Rome in 745 (cf. Stephanos 8, Stephanos 81 and Stephanos 82).
