Stephanos 49 was a deacon, notarios and referendarios of the patriarch of Constantinople; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council), where he was one of the officials who acted as readers: Mansi XII 1026 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος διάκονος καὶ νοτάριος τοῦ εὐαγοῦς πατριαρχείου), XIII 1119 (Στέφανος ὁ θεοφιλέστατος διάκονος καὶ νοτάριος τοῦ εὐαγοῦς πατριαρχικοῦ σεκρετοῦ), XIII 12 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος διάκονος καὶ νοτάριος καὶ ρεφερενδάριος), XIII 24 (Στέφανος διάκονος), XIII 44 (Στέφανος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος διάκονος καὶ νοτάριος), XIII 89 (Στέφανος ὁ θεοφιλέστατος διάκονος νοτάριος καὶ ρεφερενδάριος τοῦ εὐαγοῦς σεκρετοῦ), XIII 180 (Στέφανος διάκονος καὶ νοτάριος τοῦ εὐαγοῦς πατριαρχείου), XIII 184 (Στέφανος ὁ θεοφιλέστατος διάκονος, νοτάριος καὶ ρεφενδάριος). At the first session of the Council, on 24 September 787, he read an extract from the Council of Ephesos: Mansi XII 1026. At the third session, on 28 September 787, he read out the letter which Tarasios 1 had sent to the eastern patriarchs shortly before the Council met: Mansi XII 1119. At the fourth session, on 1 October 787, he read from works by Cyril of Alexandria, Athanasios and Leontios of Neapolis in Cyprus and from the Passio of the martyr Prokopios: Mansi XIII 12 (Cyril), XIII 24 (Athanasios), XIII 44 (Leontios), XIII 89 (Martyrdom of Prokopios). At the fifth session, on 4 October 787, he read from the Ecclesiastical History of Ioannes Diakrinomenos and from the Life of Severus of Antioch by Ioannes of Gabala: Mansi XIII 180 (Ioannes Diakrinomenos), XIII 184 (Ioannes of Gabala).
