Stephanos 1 was one of the rebels from Hellas and the Islands who proclaimed Kosmas 12 emperor in 727, in opposition to the emperor Leo III (Leo 3) and his iconoclast policy; after their defeat he was arrested and beheaded, like Kosmas 12; described as ἕτερός τις Στέφανος: Nic. Brev. de Boor 58, Mango 60:17-18, Theoph. AM 6218, cf. Cedr. I 796, 7-11.
