Stephanites 1 was a young servant in the monastery of Dios in Constantinople, he was present when Theodoros 170 and the hegoumenos (Anonymus 257) secretly deposited remains of Stephanos 2 (Stephen the Younger) in a casket there; he was the only other witness: Vita Steph. Iun. 173, 5 (1180C) (συμπαρόντος καί τινος Στεφανίτου παιδαρίου μικροῦ τῆς παρούσης μονῆς). He had grown up in the monastery from childhood under the supervision of the hegoumenos; a few years after the death of Stephanos 2, he asked the hegoumenos to make him a deacon; the hegoumenos refused because he was still too young and immature, and in revenge Stephanites 1 stole the casket and revealed to the emperor what Theodoros 170 and the hegoumenos had done; he was told to guard the casket safely until their trial, but, when the time came, it was found that the casket had disappeared; they were then released and Stephanites 1 was beaten and banished from Constantinople: Vita Steph. Iun. 173, 17-174, 22 (1181A-C).
