A priest (and monk), Sophronios 1 was nominated by Nicolas the Stoudite (Nikolaos 26) to succeed him as hegoumenos of the monastery of Stoudios at Constantinople when Nikolaos 26 decided to retire to the metochion of Phirmoupolis in 849/850; he is said to have lived up to his name and practised restraint in his way of life: Vita Nic. Stud. 904D (τὸν τούτοις καθηγησόμενον, Σωφρόνιον μὲν ἐπονομαζόμενον, καὶ τῷ τοῦ πρεσβυτερίου κατακοσμούμενον ἀξιώματι). He administered the monastery for four years and then died, on 3 November (presumably 853 or 854); Nikolaos 26 returned as his successor: Vita Nic. Stud. 905A. A Stoudite monk and hegoumenos of the monastery of Stoudios, Sophronios was not the immediate successor of Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15): Vita B Theod. Stud. Head of the monastery, he was one of the sources of information about the miracles performed by Theodoros 15 (especially the earlier ones) cited in the Lives of Theodore the Stoudite: Vita C Theod. Stud. §65, p. 295 (ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν Σωφρόνιος, ὁ τῆς αὐτοῦ ποίμνης προστατεύσας), §§66-67, pp. 295-6, Vita B Theod. Stud. 308D, 309C, 312A, Vita A Theod. Stud. 212D, 213BCD (referred to as ὁ θεῖος Πατὴρ ἡμῶν Σωφρόνιος or similar). He seems to have been known personally by the author of Vita B of Theodoros 15, Michael 128: cf. Vita B Theod. Stud. 308D, 309C. He was a disciple of Nikolaos 26 (Nicolas the Stoudite): Vita C Theod. Stud., §66, p. 295 (τῷ ἐμῷ καθηγητῇ Νικολάῳ).
