Sergios 99 was one of three persons anathematised as a supporter of icon veneration by the Council called for that purpose by the emperor Constantine V (Konstantinos 7): Chron. 1234, ยง183 (p. 337) ("they anathematised Sergios and Ioannis son of Mansur and George the Damascene"). However, this source is clearly confused, cf. Ioannes 11 and Georgios 5, and the name Sergios should be Germanos; the reference is to the former patriarch of Constantinople, Germanos 8, who was anathematised by this council (the Council of Hieria, in 754) together with Ioannes 11 and Georgios 5.
