Georgios 5 was a native of Cyprus: Mansi XIII 357 (οὗ Κύπρος ἡ πατρίς), Nic. Brev. de Boor 66, Mango 72, Theoph. AM 6245 (Γεώργιον τὸν Κύπριον), Zon. XV 6. 12 (τὸν ἐκ Κύπρου Γεώργιον). Described as mild mannered and a person who turned the other cheek, he became a monk from boyhood (ᾗρε τὸν ζυγὸν ἐκ νεότητος αὐτοῦ): Mansi XIII 357. He was anathematised, together with Germanos 8 and Mansour (i.e. John of Damascus, Ioannes 11), by the iconoclast Council of Hieria in 754: Mansi XIII 356 (citing the proceedings of that Council; Γερμανοῦ, Γεωργίου καὶ Μανσοὺρ τῶν κακοδόξων φρόνημα ὑμεῖς διελύσατε, (later) Γεωργίῳ τῷ ὁμόφρονι αὐτοῦ (i.e. of Germanos 8) καὶ φαλσεύτῃ τῶν πατρικῶν διδασκαλίων, ἀνάθεμα), Nic. Brev. de Boor 66, Mango 72, Theoph. AM 6245, Zon. XV 6.12, cf. Chron. 1234, §183 (p. 337) ("they anathematised Sergios and Ioannis son of Mansur and George the Damascene" (Gywrgy drmswqy'); this source is evidently confused but the reference to George is to Georgios 5). According to Zonaras, Georgios was patriarch of Konstantina (in Cyprus): Zon. XV 6. 12 (τὸν ἐκ Κύπρου Γεώργιον πατριάρχην τῆς Κωνσταντίνου γενόμενον). At the seventh session of the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) Georgios 5 was acclaimed together with Ioannes 11 (John of Damascus): Mansi XIII 400 (Ἰωάννου καὶ Γεωργίου αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη). He was a monk, whose Vita is mentioned in the Acts of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. Allegedly he was a hermit and had a pupil called Theosebos, whose work (Νουθεσία γέροντος περὶ τῶν ἁγίων εἰκόνων) is a source for his teachings and narrates a debate which Georgios 5 had with a supporter of Iconoclasm shortly before 754; see Beck, Kirche, p. 487. Cf. however Georgios 237.
