Sergios 49 was patricius and strategos of Sicily; he intercepted and seized letters sent from Italy ("cuncta generalitas istius provinciae Italiae") to the emperors Leo III (Leo 3) and his son Constantine (Konstantinos 7) opposing their iconoclast policy and detained the carriers for eight months before sending them back to Italy in disgrace (cf. Konstantinos 137): Lib. Pont. 92. 4 ("a Sergio patricio et stratigo ipsius insule Sicilie"). To judge by the chronology of previous correspondence in the time of pope Gregory III (Gregorios 7), the date was probably about 733.
