Serenus 2 succeeded Petrus (Petros 78) as patriarch of Aquileia early in the eighth century, possibly around the time when the emperor Justinian II (Ioustinianos 1) was overthrown by Philippicus (Philippikos 1) at Constantinople (in 712); he is described as a man of simple habits and a devoted servant of Christ ("regimen Aquileiensis ecclesiae suscepit Serenus, qui fuit vir simplicitate praeditus et ad Christi servitium pronus"): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 33. He died at Forum Iulii and was succeeded by Callistus (Kallistos 9): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 45 ("aput Foroiuli igitur sublato e rebus humanis patriarcha Sereno"). According to Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 51, the patriarchs of Aquileia were prevented from living at Aquileia by Roman attacks and resided at Cormones ("Cormones castrum").
