Samuel 1 was known for his generosity to the needy: Vita Nic. Stud. 909C. A pious man living in Constantinople, he invited the Stoudite monks Evarestos 1 and Paphnoutios 1, who with others had left the monastery (perhaps on the occasion of the dismissal of the patriarch Ignatios 1, in 858) and taken up a wandering life, to come and live under his roof and enjoy his support and protection: Vita S. Evaristi 13 (p. 307) Nikolaos 26, after his interview with the emperor Michael III (Michael 11), went to live with Evarestos 1 in the house of Samuel 1, who, when he heard, hurried to receive a blessing from him; a number of monks seem to have been living together in the house and, with the arrival of Nikolaos 26, many more wandering Stoudites came to join them; the house was too small to contain them all, and so Samuel 1 (ὁ τῆς ξενίας ταύτης οἰκοδεσπότης) purchased a property in the neighbouring district of Kokkorobion and gave it to Nikolaos 26 for the monks: Vita S. Evaristi 15 (p. 308), cf. Vita Nic. Stud. 909C-912A (he purchased a site within the city in the district of Liba - ἔνδον τῆς πόλεως πρὸς τὰ τοῦ Λίβα μέρη - where Nikolaos could have peace; this site was formerly known as the district of Kokkorobion - ἄνωθεν τῇ προσωνυμίᾳ τῶν Κοκοροβίου ἐπιφερόμενον).
