Textual SourcesVita Evaristi (BHG 2153), ed. C. Van de Vorst, "La Vie de S. Evariste higoumène à Constantinople", Anal. Boll. 41 (1923), pp. 295-325 (hagiography)

Paphnoutios 1 was a monk of the monastery of Stoudios; when the monks dispersed during a time of dissension in the Church (possibly over the dismissal of the patriarch Ignatios 1 in 858), Paphnoutios 1 accompanied St Evarestos (Evarestos 1) on his wanderings; he was a devout monk, like Evarestos 1, and they were soul-mates; eventually the two of them were invited by Samuel 1 to live at his house in Constantinople, where they received help and protection: Vita S. Evaristi 13 (p. 307). Later Paphnoutios 1 was made overseer by Nikolaos 26 of the monastic community settled at Kokkorobion in Constantinople, when it was first created on land given to Nikolaos 26 by Samuel 1: Vita S. Evaristi 15 (p. 308) (τούτου τοίνυν τοῦ χωρίου Παφνούτιον ὡς ἐν τῷ τέως ἐπιμελητὴν ὁ Νικόλαος κατεστήσατο). Shortly before Nikolaos 26 died, he appointed Evarestos 1 as hegoumenos of the monastery of Kokkorobion with Paphnoutios 1 as second in authority responsible for the management, probably as oikonomos: Vita S. Evaristi 18 (p. 310) His name suggests an Egyptian origin.
