Ratperga 1 was the wife of the Lombard dux of Forum Iulii, Pemmo 1; they had three sons, Ratchis 1, Ratchait 1 and Aistulf 1; she is described as a woman of very plain looks ("facie rusticana") who, when her husband became dux, suggested that he take another prettier and more suitable wife; he remained with her, claiming that her character and virtue pleased him more than physical beauty; Paul the Deacon (Paulos 52) remarks that her plainness was turned to glory by the bearing of such sons ("quorum nativitas humilitatem matris ad gloriam erexit"): Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 26.
