Parakondakes 1 was an exarchos (ἔξαρχον ὄντα) in the Armeniac theme sometime between 811 and 820 (under Michael I (Michael 7) or Leo V (Leo 15)), probably at Neokaisareia, where he and the bishop Thomas 1 received and carried out imperial orders to seek out and kill heretics; he was later murdered by followers of the Paulician Sergios 1, the so-called Astatoi: Peter of Sicily, 175-177. The word exarchos probably denotes a military officer.
