Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Nikolaos 4 was a priest, a monk and hegoumenos of the monastery of Apros; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council), where he represented the metropolitan bishop of Tyana (in Kappadokia); he was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 994-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Νικολάου μοναχοῦ καὶ ἡγουμένου μονῆς ἐπιλεγομένης Ἄπρου (no accent or breathing is given for this name; these are suggested restorations) καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχοντος τοῦ μητροπολίτου Τυάνων: Mansi XII 994. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Νικολάου πρεσβυτέρου, ἡγουμένου καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ Τυάνων: Mansi XIII 365. Did he become priest during the course of the Council, perhaps between the fourth (1 October 787) and seventh sessions (13 October 787)? Cf. below. At the second session he is styled Νικόλαος ἡγούμενος τοῦ Ἄπρου (no accent or breathing is given for this name; these are suggested restorations) καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων τῆς Τυανέων μητροπόλεως: Mansi XII 1091. At the third session he is styled Νικόλαος ὁ εὐλαβέστατος μοναχὸς καὶ ἡγούμενος τοῦ Ἄπρου (no accent or breathing is given for this name; these are suggested restorations) καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων τῆς μητροπόλεως Τυάνων: Mansi XII 1150. At the fourth session he is styled Νικόλαος μοναχὸς ἡγούμενος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ θρόνου Τυάνων: Mansi XIII 136. At the second session he spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1091. At the third session he accepted as orthodox the statement of the faith contained in letters from the eastern patriarchs: Mansi XII 1150. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 136. His name does not occur among those who subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council at the seventh session (he was present at this session, see above; the name of Nikolaos has perhaps fallen out of the text after the entry for Nikephoros of Dyrrachion; cf. Mansi XIII 381). See Gregorios 22.
