Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Gregorios 22 was a priest of the Holy Apostles at Constantinople; in 787 he probably attended the last seven sessions of the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council), from 26 September to 23 November, as representative of the see of Mokissos (in Cappadocia Secunda): Mansi XII 1051-XIII 486 (attested at the second and the seventh sessions). In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Γρηγορίου πρεσβυτέρου καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ Μωκισοῦ: Mansi XIII 365. Elsewhere he is styled Γρηγόριος πρεσβύτερος Κωνσταντινουπόλεως τῶν ἁγίων ἀποστόλων καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων τῆς μητροπόλεως Μωκισοῦ: Mansi XII 1094. At the first session the see was represented by a monk, Nikolaos 5. At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1094. At the seventh session among the subscribers to the statement of the faith adopted by the Council his name is given as Georgios: Mansi XIII 384 (Γεώργιος ἁμαρτωλὸς, πρεσβύτερος καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων τοῦ θρόνου Μωκισοῦ). There may be a double error here. Comparison with the sequence of names in the list of those present at this session shows the representative of Mokissos taking his place among the bishops or representatives of Side, Sardinia, Dyrrachion, Tyana, Amaseia, Gangra, Klaudiopolis and Neokaisareia; in the list of subscribers, however, Mokissos occurs among a different group of names, viz. Antioch of Pisidia, Perge, Trapezous, Rhodos and Adrianoupolis, in a place occupied in the other list by Gregorios 40 representing Traianopolis in Thrace. The representative of Traianopolis is missing from the list of subscribers. This suggests that the entry for Gregorios of Traianopolis should be restored where now George of Mokissos occurs, and George of Mokissos, corrected to Gregory, should be inserted between the bishops of Amaseia and Gangra. The representative of Tyana, Nikolaos 4, is also missing from the list of subscribers, which therefore appears to be very defective as we have it in Mansi.
