Nikolaos 3 was bishop of Kyzikos; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 994-XIII 486. In the lists of those present at the first and the seventh sessions he is styled Νικολάου ἐπισκόπου Κυζίκου: Mansi XII 994, XIII 365. Elsewhere he is styled Νικόλαος ὁ θεοφιλέστατος ἐπίσκοπος Κυζίκου or similar: Mansi XII 1087, XII 1147, XIII 136, XIII 164, XIII 381. At the second session he spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and the patriarch Tarasios 1: Mansi XII 1087. At the third session he accepted as orthodox statements of the faith contained in the letter from Tarasios 1 and the eastern patriarchs and iconoclasts (Nikolaos 3 made a personal statement at this session): Mansi XII 1147. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 136. At the fifth session he produced a work by bishop Ioannes of Thessalonike to be read out to the Council: Mansi XIII 164. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 381. Probably identical with the metropolitan of Kyzikos, Nikolaos, owner of a seal dateable to the eighth century: Laurent, Corpus V 1, 346 = Schlumberger, Sig., pp. 199-200 = Rostovtsev and Prou, Catalogue, p. 290, no. 873. Obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει and the legend τῷ σῷ δουλῷ. Rev.: + - Νικολ - [α]ῳ μητρ - [ο]πολιτ() Κ - υζικου.
