When the island of Arwad was conquered for the Arabs by Junadah 1 in AH 54 (Dec. 673/Dec. 674), the Muslims, according to one source (Muhammad b. `Umar), "stayed there for a while - it is said, seven years - while Mujahid b. Jabr was there"; then, at the death of Mu` awiya 1 and the accession of Yezid 1, the Arabs abandoned the island and returned home: Tabari XVIII, p. 172. The island is presumably Rhodes, whose capture by Junada is also recorded in Tabari under the year AH 53 (Dec. 672/Dec. 673). The role of Mujahid 1 is not made clear; possibly he was the Arab military governor of the island, but he may have been simply an Arab who settled there for the duration of the occupation, then left and is the source for the tradition recorded by Muhammad b. `Umar. Muhammad b. `Umar was the source cited by Tabari for the conquest of Rhodes in AH 53, where it is recorded that "Muslims settled there, cultivated it, and acquired wealth there" (Tabari XVIII, p. 166).
