Mauros 6 was described as Maurus Nepesinus; in 799, after the assaults on pope Leo III (Leo 11) (on 25 April), Mauros 6 plotted with Paschalis 4 and Campulus 1 to remove Leo 11 from the monastery of St Silvester, where they had confined him, to the monastery of St Erasmus (see Anonymus 320), where they intended to keep him under secure guard and prevent rescue by his supporters: Lib. Pont. 98. 13. Although Mauros 6's name is not mentioned elsewhere in the account of these events, he seems to have been one of the leaders of the attacks on the pope and presumably, like Paschalis 4, Campulus 1 and the others, was eventually convicted and exiled to Francia; see Lib. Pont. 98. 11-26 and cf. Paschalis 4. He was perhaps a native of Nepi, rather than a bishop; there is no suggestion that he was an ecclesiastic.
