Matthaios 1 was probably bishop of Aleppo; a contemporary of Severus Sebokht (Severus 2) and like him famous for his wisdom: Chron. 1234, ยง137 (p. 282) (recorded under the year 664; "and Mattai(?) (Mty) of Aleppo").
