Following a prophecy (by an unnamed Arabian woman "pythoness"; see Anonyma 6) that Martinakios 1's family (οἱ Μαρτινάκιοι) would shortly rule the empire, Martinakios 1 was compelled by the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5) to become a monk and to convert his house into a monastery: Theoph. Cont. III 27 (p. 121) (Μαρτινάκης), Ps.-Symeon 635 (Μαρτινάκιος), Scylitzes, p. 72 (τὸ τῶν Μαρτινακίων γένος), Genesius III 15 (τῷ μονήρει βίῳ τὸν ἐκ τοῦ γένους ἄνδρα κατέκρινε Μαρτηνάκιον, τὸν αὐτοῦ οἶκον μεταποιήσας εἰς μοναχῶν φροντιστήριον). He was related to Theophilos 5 (προσῳκειωμένον αὐτῷ πως κατὰ συγγένειαν): Theoph. Cont. III 27. He was well regarded by the emperor until the prophecy (στεργόμενον αὐτῷ): Scylitzes, p. 72. On the family of Martinakios 1, see Mango, Eudocia Ingerina, pp. 20ff.
