Markianos 3 was archbishop of Syracuse; owner of a seal dateable to the second quarter of the eighth century: Laurent, Corpus V 1, no. 885. Obv.: invocative monogram of Θεοτόκε βοήθει. Rev.: + - Μ[αρ]κ - ιανω - αρχηε - πισκ(όπῳ). The seal was apparently found at Syracuse. The date is after c.733, when the bishoprics of Byzantine Italy were annexed by the patriarchate of Constantinople and Greek began to appear on seals, but probably in the middle years of the century since the episcopal list of Scobar (in Mansi XI, col. 179) places Markianos 3 before Theodosios III who was succeeded by Stephanos II (Stephanos 50) who was bishop in 787; on the arguments for the date and for the status of the see of Syracuse, see Laurent, op. cit., p. 694, note, citing F. Lanzoni, Le diocesi d'Italia dalle origini al principio del secolo VII (an. 604), I- II, p. 636.
