Markellos 2 was the successor of Paulicius (Paulikios 1) as dux of Venetia; he held office for nine years and sixteen days and was succeeded in turn by Ursus (Oursos 3): Chron. Alt., p. 115 ("Marcellus dux ducavit annos VIIII, dies XVI"). According to John the Deacon, he was the successor of Paulikios 1 and he died about the time when Antoninos 2 became patriarch of Grado and the emperor Leo III (Leo 3) died; he held office at Civitas Nova for eighteen years and twenty days ("eodem quoque tempore prelibato Marcello duce mortuo, qui apud Civitatem Novam Venecie ducatum annis decem et octo et diebus viginti gubernaverat"); he was succeeded by Ursus (Oursos 3): John the Deacon, Cron. Ven., p. 94.
