A native of Padua, Antoninos 2 was abbas of the monastery of Brendulum and was patriarch of Grado for twenty two-years, ten months and twenty days; he succeeded Donatos 11 and was succeeded by Aimilianos 4: Chron. Alt., p. 124 ("Antonius patriarcha, qui fuit nacione Padue civitatis, abbas fuit Brenduli cenobii, qui vixit in patriarchatu ann. XXII, mens. X, dies XX"), cf. John the Deacon, Cron. Ven., p. 96 (death of "Antoninus Gradensis patriarcha", after twenty-two years, ten months, twenty days). Successor of Donatus (Donatos 11) as patriarch of Grado: John the Deacon, Cron. Ven., p. 94, Chronicum de Singulis Patriarchis, p. 14. When Ravenna fell to the Lombards under Hildebrand 1 and Paradeo 1, Antoninos 2 received a letter from pope Gregory III (Gregorios 7) asking him to urge the Venetici to defend Ravenna: John the Deacon, Cron. Ven., pp. 95-96.

Archbishop of Grado ("Antonino Gradense archiepiscopo"), he attended the Council summoned by pope Gregory III (Gregorios 7) at Rome (in c. 732) which condemned iconoclasm and excommunicated those who rejected the traditional veneration of icons: Lib. Pont. 92. 3. According to Duchesne, Lib. Pont., p. 421 n. 6, the letter summoning Antoninus to the Council is extant (Jaffé 2232); Duchesne also cites a passage referring to this summons from the Chronicon Gradense (MGH, Scr. Rer. Lang., 9. 396) which calls him "Antoninus patriarcha" and notes that the Council met to discuss not only images but also illegal marriages which were taking place in various places ("inlicita coniugia quae per diversa loca fiebant"). The letter from pope Gregory III (Gregorios 7) is in PG 89. 586; addressed "dilectissimo fratri Antonio Gradensi archiepiscopo seu dilectissimis nobis episcopis eiusdem ordinationi seu concilio pertinentibus", the letter invites them to attend a Council at Rome on the Kalends of November, of the fifteenth indiction, i.e. 1 November 732.
