Formerly a deacon (of the Church at Constantinople, cf. below), Leontios 17 was one of the supporters of the monothelete Makarios 1 who were sent into exile with him at Rome after the Sixth Ecumenical Council in 681: Lib. Pont. 81. 14 ("cum suis amatoribus ... Leontio ex diaconis"). Subsequently he was restored to communion by pope Leo II (Leo 16) after announcing his acceptance of the Council's statement of faith at Epiphany (683) and anathematising its opponents; he was not one of those who had previously been anathematised by the Council: Lib. Pont. 82. 3 ("Leontium diaconum ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae"). See also Anastasios 12. He is not to be identified with Leontios 4 (the only deacon called Leontios recorded in the Acts of the Council).
