Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Leo 46 was oikonomos, probably at Sozopolis in Pisidia; in 787 he represented the see of Sozopolis at the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and is attested at the first and second sessions: Mansi XII 999, XII 1107. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Λεοντίου (sic) οἰκονόμου καὶ τοποτηρητοῦ Σωζοπόλεως: Mansi XII 999 (the Latin version, at XII 1000, calls him: "Leone vicedomino et vicario Sozopoleos"). Elsewhere he is styled Λέων οἰκονόμος καὶ τοποτηρητὴς Σωζοπόλεος: Mansi XII 1107 (the Latin version, at XII 1108, has "Leo vicedominus et vicarius Sozopoleos"). At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1107. His see is placed in both lists between Pisidian and Pamphylian bishoprics. It is therefore to be identified with Sozopolis in Pisidia, not with that in Haemimontos. The bishop of the latter, Euthymios 4, is attested only at sessions four and seven, and Sozopolis in Pisidia only at sessions one and two; possibly one of the sees has each time been omitted in favour of the other in the surviving text. A trace of this may be found at XII 1110 in an entry which reads: Λέων οἰκονόμος καὶ τοποτηρητὴς Ζωροπόλεως (sic). This entry occupies the position in the list occupied later by the Haemimontos Sozopolis and Euthymios 4 (among the sees of Haemimontos) and therefore combines features of both sees. Possibly at some stage a scribe, suspecting duplication (wrongly), removed Euthymios of Haemimontan Sozopolis from the early sessions and Leo of Pisidian Sozopolis from later ones. Whatever the cause, the pattern is curious and requires explanation.
