Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Euthymios 4 was bishop of Sozopolis in Haemimontus; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) and is attested at the fourth and seventh sessions: Mansi XIII 149, XIII 372, XIII 397. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Εὐθυμίου ἐπισκόπου Σωζοπόλεως: Mansi XIII 372. Elsewhere he is styled Εὐθύμιος ἐπίσκοπος Σωζοπόλεως or similar: Mansi XIII 149, XIII 397. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 149. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 397. He possibly attended the second session and gave his support to the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1). At Mansi XII 1110 there is the entry: Λέων οἰκονόμος καὶ τοποτηρητής Ζωροπόλεως. This is in the position in the list occupied later by Euthymios 4 and his see, among bishops from Haemimontus, but it parallels the entry (at XII 1107, which reads Λέων οἰκονόμος καὶ τοποτηρητὴς Σωζοπόλεως) for Leo 46, oikonomos and topoteretes of Sozopolis in Pisidia. See on this Leo 46.
