Leo 25 was said to have been the son of the emperor Michael III (Michael 11) and Eudokia 2 Ingerina; he was born on 1 September 866 (indiction fifteen): Leo Gramm. 249 (wrongly December), Georg. Mon. Cont. 835, Ps.-Symeon 681 (where he is wrongly named as Konstantinos), Zon. XVI 7. 17 (son of Basilios 7, but thought to be Michael 11's son, as his mother was already pregnant when she married Basilios 7 - τίκτεται δὲ τῷ Βασιλείῳ ἐκ τῆς Εὐδοκίας παιδίον ἄρρεν ὁ Λέων, ὃ τοῦ Μιχαὴλ μᾶλλον εἶναι ἐλέγετο, ὡς ἐγκύου τῆς Εὐδοκίας οὔσης ὅτε τῷ Βασιλείῳ συνῴκιστο). Leo 25 was in fact the son of the emperor Basil I (Basilios 7) and was born on 19 September 866; cf. Ostrogorsky, History, (tr. Hussey), p. 233, note 1. Son of the emperor Basilios 7 and brother of Konstantinos 141, Alexandros 10 and Stephanos (see PBE II); he was crowned with Konstantinos 141 and Alexandros 10 by his father Basilios 7; owing to the premature death of Konstantinos 141, it was he who succeeded his father; they were for a time estranged but were later reconciled: Genesius IV 29. He was the emperor Leo VI; see further PBE II. Cf. also Leo 267 and Anonymus 590.
