Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Kyrillos 2 was a monk; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) as the representative of the bishop of Gotthia; he is attested at the first, second, third, fourth and seventh sessions, and was probably present at all eight sessions of the Council, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 994-XIII 384. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Κυρίλλου μοναχοῦ καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχοντος Νικήτα ἐπισκόπου Γοτθίας: Mansi XII 994. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Κυρίλλου μοναχοῦ καὶ ἐκ προσώπου Γοτθίας: Mansi XIII 365. Elsewhere he is called Κύριλλος ἐπίσκοπος Γοτθίας, Mansi XII 1095 (the Latin version, at XII 1096 styles him "Cyrillus ex persona sanctissimi episcopi Gothiae"); Κύριλλος μοναχὸς καὶ τοποτηρητὴς Νικήτα ἐπισκόπου Γοτθίας, Mansi XII 1154; Κύριλλος μοναχὸς καὶ ἐκ προσώπου Ἰωάννου ἐπισκόπου Γότθων, Mansi XIII 137; and Κύριλλος ἁμαρτωλὸς μοναχὸς καὶ τὸν τόπον ἐπέχων Νικοπόλεως (sic) ἐπισκόπου Γοτθίας, Mansi XIII 384 (the Latin version, at XIII 383, styles him "Cyrillus peccator monachus et locum retinens Niceri episcopi Gotthiae"). At the second session he spoke in support of the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1095. At the third session he accepted as orthodox the statements of the faith contained in letters from Tarasios 1 to the eastern patriarchs and from the patriarchs in reply and condemned those who refused to accept them: Mansi XII 1154. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the traditional veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 137. At the seventh session he subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council: Mansi XIII 384. For the name of the bishop, see Ioannes 6 and Niketas 33.
