Kombokonon 1 held the post of antigrapheus; he was one of the leading iconoclasts under Constantine V (Konstantinos 7) and was sent by the emperor with Kallistos 8 and other notables, lay and clerical, to interview Stephen the Younger (Stephanos 2) in custody in Chrysopolis: Vita Steph. Iun. 142, 9-13 (1140B-C) (Κομβοκόνωνα τὸν ἀντιγραφέα), 143, 27 (1141C) (οἱ δὲ περὶ Κάλλιστον καὶ Κομβοκόνωνα ὄντες τῆς συγκλήτου; they had to restrain the young bishop of Nikomedeia, Konstantinos 139, from attacking Stephanos 2). Later, when the mission returned to Constantinople, it fell to the lay members to inform the emperor that they had failed to influence Stephanos 2: Vita Steph. Iun. 146, 5-8 (1145A). The date of the event was probably 762. The antigrapheis were high officials serving under the kuaistor; cf. Oikonomides, Listes, pp. 321-322.
