Kalomaria 1 is so named at Theoph. Cont. IV 22 (ἥ τε εὐφήμῳ οὕτω καλουμένη ὀνόματι Καλομαρία), but Kale Maria at Genesius IV 9; Maria in Scylitzes. Sister of the empress Theodora 2 (and therefore sister-in-law of the emperor, Theophilos 5), Sophia 1 and Eirene 4, and of Petronas 5 and Bardas 5; she married Arsaber 5: Theoph. Cont. IV 22 (p. 175), Genesius IV 9 (sister of the empress Theodora 2 - Θεοδώρας τὴν σύγγονον, ἐφ' ᾗ Καλὴ Μαρία τὸ εὔφημον), Scyl., p. 98. All the sisters were handsome and virtuous: Scyl., p. 98 (αἱ πάσαι καλαὶ καὶ ἀγαθαὶ τὰς ὄψεις καὶ ἀρετῆς ἐλάσασαι πρὸς ἀκρώρειαν). She aided Bardas 5 and the emperor Michael III (Michael 11) in their plot to overthrow Theoktistos 3, keeping watch from a high chamber to tell Michael 11 when Bardas 5 attacked Theoktistos 3: Genesius IV 9.
