Arsaber 5 was the brother of the patriarch of Constantinople, Ioannes 5; under the emperor Theophilos (Theophilos 5) he became a patrikios (τὴν τύχην πατρίκιος παρὰ Θεοφίλου τιμηθείς: Theoph. Cont. IV 8, p. 156); owner of a large and splendid villa on the left bank of the Bosporus where Ioannes 5 had an underground dwelling place built in which to perform rites of divination; the villa was later sold by Arsaber 5 to Basilios 7 and converted into the monastery of St Phocas: Theoph. Cont. IV 8 (pp. 156-157). Arsaber 5 was therefore still alive late in the reign of Michael III (Michael 11, between 855 and 866). The family name was Morokardanios (see Ioannes 5).
