Kallinikos 2 was a priest and skeuophylax of Blachernae: Nic., Chron. 69. He was patriarch of Constantinople for twelve years, in succession to Paulos 3: Nic., Chron. 69, Theoph. AM 6177 (πατριαρχίας), Theoph. AM 6186 (Καλλίνικον τὸν πατριάρχην), Theoph. AM 6197 (Κωσταντ. ἐπίσκοπος Καλλίνικος ἔτη ιβ'. ιβ'). In 694, as patriarch, he unwillingly gave way to pressure from the emperor Justinian II (Ioustinianos 1) to allow the demolition of a church of the Theotokos which stood near the palace and was under his authority, in order to make way for premises for the Blue faction desired by Ioustinianos 1; a new church was built for him at the Petrion (εἰς τὸ Πετρίν): Theoph. AM 6186. As patriarch of Constantinople in 695, he was forced to address the crowd assembled in Hagia Sophia in support of the rebellion of Leontios 2: Nic. Brev. de Boor 38, Mango 40. According to Theophanes he was already terrified by Ioustinianos 1's orders to Stephanos 7 to kill him and so yielded more readily to Leontios 2's request that he speak to the crowds: Theoph. AM 6187. While patriarch of Constantinople, he cooperated in the overthrow of Ioustinianos 1: Zon. XIV 22. 33 (ὕβριζον μὲν τὸν Ἰουστινιανόν εὐφήμουν δὲ τὸν Λεόντιον, συνεργοῦντος καὶ Καλλινίκου τοῦ πατριάρχου).

In 706 he was blinded by Ioustinianos 1 for his action in 695 and was deposed and exiled to Rome: Nic. Brev. de Boor 42, Mango 42, Theoph. AM 6198, Nic., Chron. 69, Zon. XIV 25. 4, Paul. Diac., Hist. Lang. VI 31. His dates were 694-706. He was succeeded by Kyros 1: Theoph. AM 6198.
