Sister of Moschos 3 and Eirene 15, Kale 1 was the addressee jointly with her sister of three letters from Theodore the Stoudite (Theodoros 15): Theod. Stud., Ep. 161 (a. 816/818; addressed Εἰρήνῃ καὶ Καλῇ ἀδελφαῖς), Ep. 200 (a. 815/818?; addressed δυσὶν ἀδελφαῖς Εἰρήνῃ καὶ Καλῇ), Ep. 211 (a. 815/818; addressed Εἰρήνῃ καὶ Καλῇ δυσὶν ἀδελφαῖς). The two sisters are mentioned in a letter addressed to their brother Moschos 3, whom they used to help with his work with orphans: Theod. Stud., Ep. 88 (spring 815/spring 816). They were of noble family: Theod. Stud., Ep. 211. They were rich but chose to abandon wealth, birth and family and to live a religious life, remaining virgins and devoting themselves to charitable works, like nuns although they did not enter a convent: Theod. Stud., Ep. 161 (τὸν αὐτὸν τῆς παρθενίας εἱλάμεναι βίον), Ep. 200 (they lived ἔξω τοῦ μοναδικοῦ βίου), Ep. 211 (φέροντες τὰ τῆς εὐγενείας ἐν λαμπρότητι). They sent gifts to Theodoros 15 by a messenger who also reported the death of their brother: Theod. Stud., Ep. 161. They were orthodox (i.e. they supported the veneration of icons): Theod. Stud., Ep. 200. After the death of their brother they continued his work for orphans; he had left forty children in the orphanage in their care: Theod. Stud., Ep. 211. They are styled τῆς τιμιότητος ὑμῶν, Theod. Stud., Ep. 200; and ἡ τιμία ὑμῶν δυάς, Theod. Stud., Ep. 161.
