Ioannes 437 was a spatharios; addressee of a letter from Theodoros 15 (Theodore the Stoudite) (the letter is addressed Ἰωάννῃ σπαθαρίῳ); at the baptism of his son (Demetrios 33) he used an icon of St Demetrios in place of a sponsor (ἀντὶ ἀναδόχου: p. 48, line 5) and named his son (Demetrios 33) after the saint (τὸν υἱόν σου καὶ ὁμώνυμον τοῦ Ἁγίου Δημητρίου: p. 49, lines 34-35); he is addressed by Theodoros 15 as ἄνθρωπε τοῦ Θεοῦ (p. 48, line 3) and ἀνὴρ εὐσεβέστατε (p. 49, line 31) and is styled σου τὴν κυριότητα (p. 48, line 2) and τῆς μεγαλωσύνης σου (p. 49, line 23)): Theod. Stud., Ep. 17, pp. 48-49. The date of the letter is uncertain but was probably after the resumption of the persecution of iconophiles in 815, i.e. 815/826.
