Ioannes 142 was Jacobite patriarch of Antioch from 631 to 648. "Ywhnn p'tryrk'"; ordered by the emir Amr ibn Sa`id (Amr 3) to translate the Gospels from Syriac into Arabic, allegedly without mentioning Christ as God or baptism or the Cross; he refused steadfastly but was then given permission by Amr 3 to proceed as he wished; he selected a team of able linguists "from the people of the Tanoukians ("Tnwky'") and the `Aqoulians ("`qwly'" )" and after they had made translations he collated them and produced a polished version, which was then splendidly bound and presented to Amr 3: Chron. 1234, §129 (pp. 263-264). His death is recorded in 664 ("in the year 976, and 23 of Constans and 44 of the Arabs"): Chron. 1234, §137 (p. 282). Cf. Simon 2.
