Textual SourcesNikaia, Second Council of (Seventh Ecumenical Council, a. 787) (Mansi XII-XIII) (conciliar)

Ioannes 111 was priest and bishop-elect (ὑποψήφιος) of Stektorion (Ἐκτόριον) in Phrygia Salutaris; in 787 he attended the Second Council of Nikaia (the Seventh Ecumenical Council) as representative of the see of Stektorion and was probably present at all eight sessions, from 24 September to 23 November 787: Mansi XII 998-XIII 486. In the list of those present at the first session he is styled Ἰωάννου ὑποψηφίου Ἐκτορίου (sic): Mansi XII 998. In the list of those present at the seventh session he is styled Ἰωάννου πρεσβυτέρου καὶ ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ θρόνου Ἀκτορίου (sic): Mansi XIII 372. In the list of those present at the second session he is styled Ἰωάννης ὑποψήφιος τοῦ Ἐκτορίου: Mansi XII 1107. In the list of those present at the fourth session he is styled Ἰωάννης πρεσβύτερος καὶ ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ θρόνου Ἐκτορείου (sic): Mansi XIII 148. At the second session he supported the traditional veneration of icons as described in statements from pope Hadrian I (Hadrianos 1) and condemned iconoclasts: Mansi XII 1107. At the fourth session he subscribed the statements read out from the Fathers in support of the veneration of icons: Mansi XIII 148. His name is missing from the list of those who subscribed the statement of the faith adopted by the Council at the seventh session, although he is attested as present; this may be due to textual error given the lacuna on Mansi XIII 396. Other bishops from Phrygia Salutaris have disappeared in this gap (see Niketas 25 and Theophylaktos 22).
